Around 11 a.m. today, a pregnant woman was injured by artillery fire during a military operation near Sut Ngai Yang village, Hpakant Township, Kachin State.

Local residents reported, “A pregnant woman in Sut Ngai Yang was hit by shelling and was bleeding heavily from her injuries. When we tried to evacuate her, we were stopped at the main road near Maw Wan School by soldiers, who turned us back. The area is full of military personnel, and people are afraid to go outside.”

The injured woman has been identified as Ms. Seng Nan, a 23-year-old resident of Sut Ngai Yang village, who is five months pregnant.

Since late May, military columns have entered the Hpakant region, leading to frequent clashes with the KIA. Locals report that the military has been indiscriminately firing both small arms and heavy artillery into residential areas, causing injuries and damage to homes.

Residents also report that as the military advances, there have been increasing incidents of arbitrary arrest, forced human shields, and killings of civilians.
