University students and youth in Myitkyina staged a protest movement on May 25, yesterday, calling for the halt of attempts by the government led by military leader Min Aung Hlaing to resume the Myitsone hydropower dam project, according to sources.

It is reported that the students and young people in Myitkyina strongly opposed the move because the military regime has been forming committees to restart the Myitsone project and has been holding public consultation meetings in various townships of Kachin State, spreading propaganda under different pretexts.

They also demanded an end to practices of inviting the public to meetings under different titles and forcing or coercing attendance when calling for discussions related to the Myitsone project.

Similarly, it was reported that on May 22 in Putao, during a school enrollment day ceremony, students were made to attend a public meeting related to the Myitsone project without prior notice.

University students, local residents, and youth from Myitkyina, as well as people along the Ayeyarwady River, will continue to oppose the complete cancellation of the Myitsone project.

The KHRW (Kachin Human Rights Watch) organization stated that they will also continue to monitor, speak out, and expose human rights violations, negative impacts, and subsequent problems arising from the Myitsone project.
