Protest Held in Hpakant Against Military-Planned Election and Revival of the Myitsone Dam Project

Anti-coup protest groups in Hpakant area, Kachin State, staged a protest on December 24 against the election planned by the military and the renewed implementation of the Myitsone Dam project.

Hpakant Maw Hle protest group and Hpakant anti-coup forces jointly carried out the demonstration, calling on the public not to vote in the military organized election and demanding the cancellation of the Myitsone Dam project.

The Myitsone Dam project, which had been suspended for 14 years due to public opposition, is now being pushed forward again by the military regime, which is reportedly planning to resume the project in cooperation with a Chinese company in 2026.

In addition, the military regime has announced that it will take action against those who oppose the Myitsone Dam project, even though the project lacks sufficient supporting evidence, according to its statement.
