Public Consultation on Myitsone Project Held Again in Myitkyina

A public meeting and discussion related to the Myitsone hydropower project was held at the Chinese Cultural Training School in Shwenyaungpin Ward, Myitkyina.

The meeting took place on April 3 and was attended by Kachin State Chief Minister U Hkyet Hting Nan, relevant officials, and members of local committees.

During the discussion, Chief Minister U Hkyet Hting Nan stated that the Myitsone hydropower project can be guaranteed. He also said that electricity demand is increasing daily and that discussions like this are already far behind global developments.

Following the military coup, the military council has been making efforts to resume the Myitsone project. However, on April 1, the Kachin State Human Rights Defenders Network issued a statement calling for the complete cancellation of the project.

The network also urged authorities to fully respect public opinion regarding the project and to immediately stop threatening actions against those who oppose it.
