Most residents in the Putao region rely on farming for their livelihoods, but each year, there are increasing concerns about rice crop destruction by pests and wild rats, leading to fears of declining rice yields.
"In the past, we only did farming, but now because of pests and rats, it's getting more difficult. No matter how much effort we put in, the yields are just not the same. Output has decreased. This year, we are also worried about rats," said one local resident.
It was stated that last year yields were already low, and this year locals are worried again about potential pest and rat damage to the crops. Some villages in Swamprabum area have already experienced infestations of wild rats.
It is noted that in the late 1990s, the Putao region also faced serious hardships due to widespread crop damage from rats.
