Incidents of armed looting and sexual violence against women have reportedly increased in Myitkyina city over the past month, with multiple cases occurring even between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m., according to local residents. These incidents have heightened fear and insecurity, particularly among women who travel at night time.

According to local sources, a recent incident involved two married women and a 21 year old woman who were traveling together on a motorcycle. They were reportedly intercepted by a group of six individuals who were armed and had their faces covered with masks. The group allegedly threatened the victims at gunpoint, forcibly took all their belongings, and raped the 21 year old woman before fleeing the scene.

Sources said a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged at a nearby police station in connection with the incident.

Residents stated that this incident is not isolated. Several similar cases involving armed looting and sexual violence against women have been reported in Myitkyina city during this month alone.

They said that perpetrators appear to be operating openly, even during early night hours, indicating a growing lack of security.

Local residents believe these incidents are occurring due to the weakness of authorities in maintaining law and order and effectively controlling armed criminal activities. Many expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation especially for women.
