A male thief was arrested yesterday, March 10, at around 7:00 PM in Manhkring Ward, Myitkyina, while attempting to steal a motorcycle inside the Manhkring IDP camp, according to a local resident.
The suspect was reportedly trying to steal a motorcycle while internally displaced persons (IDPs) were gathered for a prayer service inside the camp. At around 7:00 PM, a displaced woman noticed the man turning the motorcycle’s handle and pushing it away. When she saw him, the suspect fled, and IDPs together with local residents chased and managed to apprehend him.
“At the time when the displaced people were all gathered together for prayer, the thief was trying to steal a motorcycle. An elderly woman heard a noise and came to check. She saw the thief turning the motorcycle’s handle and pushing it. When she shouted, he ran away. Then the displaced people all came out together and chased him down and caught him,” a local resident said.
When the suspect was questioned by responsible authorities and village elders, he confessed that his name is Zahkung Naw from Da Jang Village near Jam Ga Village, Waimaw Township. Before admitting this, he had given various false statements, claiming that he was from Hpakant and that he lived in Myitkyina, among other claims.
Currently, since the motorcycle owners have not filed further charges against him, responsible authorities are reportedly planning to release him after giving a warning.
In Myitkyina, thefts have been increasingly reported, including cars, motorcycles, and valuable items from houses, as well as light bulbs, electrical wires, and even worn shoes.
