Residents of Myitkyina say the city is no longer safe as robbery incidents have become increasingly frequent in recent days.

According to locals, incidents include gang robberies, home break-ins, and cases where victims have been stabbed or beaten while their belongings were being stolen.

At around 1 PM today, near the market area behind the Myemyint pawnshop in Myemyint Ward, a woman riding a motorcycle was reportedly threatened and stopped by a group of individuals, although she managed to escape.

“One of the most common times is at night. Whether you are riding a motorcycle or walking, you can get robbed in quiet areas. Robberies happen very often. Some people post about it online, but in most cases, incidents happen without anyone really knowing about them,” a male resident of Myitkyina explained.

He added that some victims have suffered serious injuries after being beaten during motorcycle and property thefts, and that concerns over threats to life have increased due to the worsening security situation.

Residents also said that most robbery perpetrators are youths, and although such incidents occur frequently, there has been little effective response from responsible authorities. They urged authorities to take responsibility and address the situation properly.

Locals further said that the increasing number of gambling dens and the open use of drugs in Myitkyina are contributing to the worsening theft and robbery problems.
