In the eastern part of Putao in Upper Kachin State, landslides and road collapses occurred in early June, causing ongoing transportation difficulties up to the present time.
"It's a jungle road, so even a little rain causes landslides. The flooding completely destroyed the roads. The road in this eastern area has only been open for about four years, and even that was built by the locals themselves," said a resident.
The makeshift jungle roads, which were constructed by local efforts and are only accessible by motorcycle, were severely damaged by heavy rains, disrupting travel. The affected villages in eastern Putao include Dinghkyet, Dingga, Marawt, Ma Pyung and Dingsa.
Residents in the area must travel to Putao town to buy basic necessities such as salt, oil, and onions, as well as seek medical treatment when they fall ill. The rough and inaccessible roads have made daily life extremely difficult.
"In the past, it took about two days on foot to reach town. It’s even harder for pregnant women and children who need vaccinations. They have to sleep overnight on the way. By motorcycle, it takes only a day to reach the town," a local explained.
Although there are small clinics in the villages, children requiring vaccinations still need to travel to town. The current road damage has made the journey even more challenging.
Despite repeated requests for a proper road since previous government administrations, no authorities have addressed the issue. As a result, locals have relied on their own efforts to build motorcycle-accessible paths, which have only been in use for nearly four years.
