In recent days, not only have clashes been occurring frequently in the Hpakant area of Kachin State, but local residents report that robbery incidents have also started happening sporadically.

Yesterday, around 8PM, near the Hpakant-Lone Khin cable bridge, a local traveling in a car carrying 8 lakhs of cash was robbed. Reports say the group of three robbers were riding together on a motorcycle. Upon reaching the car, they threatened the driver with a gun, dragged him out of the vehicle, and took the car.

A Lone Khin resident said, “There are already three known robbers from around Lon e Khin, it’s getting worse here. Robbery cases started happening since these new arrivals came in, but I can’t say who the perpetrators are. Ordinary people don't fight, we just wonder day by day where we’ll have to run and what we’ll eat. Our spirits are at rock bottom.”

Additionally, at the end of July, three armed men broke into the home of a resident in Mashi Kahtawng and robbed him, taking his phone, motorcycle, gold, and cash.

Residents of Hpakant are presently facing not only the dangers of war, but also soaring commodity prices, goods shortages, and fears for their own security on all fronts.
