Residents report that basic education high schools in Hkawng Lang Hpu Township of Putao District are facing problems due to an insufficient number of teachers.

“One year from now, it’s quite uncertain whether high schools in the Hkawng Lang Hpu area can continue operating. Currently, the Chila Wardi school is also closed. Only two schools in Tsang Yaw and Hkawng Lang Hpu town are open,” a local resident said.

At present, Hkawng Lang Hpu Township has three high schools, but only two are able to operate at the high school level. However, there are difficulties in opening them effectively due to a shortage of teachers for student instruction.

“Without teachers, students face significant challenges. Next year, it’s uncertain whether the Tsang Yaw school will even open. Teachers are not coming at all, transportation is difficult, and the government cannot resolve issues like rising costs. Children are facing real educational difficulties,” the resident added.

Currently, high school students from Hkawng Lang Hpu Township are traveling to Putao and Machanbaw Township for education, which creates serious difficulties for local children whose parents cannot afford the travel.

Trade routes to Hkawng Lang Hpu Township also have been disrupted for over three years, forcing locals to walk for an entire week just to reach Putao town.
