According to a local resident from Hpakant, a landslide occurred yesterday afternoon, December 5, near Maw Si Zar Village in Hpakant, Kachin State, causing several jade miners who were searching for leftover jade to be buried under the collapsed earth.

The landslide took place at a waste dump site near Thaya Hill close to Maw Si Zar Village. Due to the collapse, it is still unknown how many people were buried or killed.

“We don’t know exactly how many people were buried. Some were pulled out, but this happened while they were scavenging for leftover jade, so many were caught in it,” said a local resident from Hpakant.

Because the landslide happened at night while miners were searching for jade, some were swept away by the collapsing earth. While some people were rescued, others may still be trapped, and the exact number of casualties remains unknown, the resident added.

Hpakant area has frequently seen casualties, including deaths and damage to homes, caused by landslides at waste dump sites and sinkhole collapses.
