A stabbing and phone robbery occurred yesterday, July 20, near the jetty by Bala Min Htin Bridge in Myitkyina, according to reports.

The incident took place around 3:00 PM on a Sunday afternoon, when the victim was sitting and chatting with a friend.

Suddenly, three assailants approached from behind and threatened them with a knife, demanding their phone and motorcycle. During the confrontation, the victim was stabbed, according to the phone robbery victim.

“I was sitting on my motorcycle, talking with my friend, and then three guys came from behind and pointed a knife at us. They said, ‘Don't try anything or we’ll stab you.’ They held both of us at knifepoint. I tried to block them with my hand, and I fell off the motorcycle. One of them pinned me down. I think that’s when they stabbed my friend,” the victim explained.

His friend reportedly suffered two stab wounds, one to the arm and one to the back.

“He got stabbed twice. It wasn’t life-threatening, but required about seven stitches. They got away with the phone. As they threw the motorcycle key into the bushes, they couldn’t escape with the bike,” the victim added.

Locals noted that worsening political conditions and economic hardship have led to a rise in robbery and theft cases, making it unsafe even to walk around.

Despite the growing number of theft and robbery cases in Myitkyina and around the country, there has been little to no action taken by authorities, leading to worsening public safety conditions, according to residents.

They further stated that the lack of accountability and action from responsible officials has only encouraged more such incidents.
