Amid intensified clashes between the State Administration Council (SAC) and revolutionary forces nationwide, the SAC has announced that those wishing to apply for political party registration must submit their applications to the Union Election Commission (UEC) by May 9. The general election is scheduled to be held in December 2025.
Currently, while the SAC has extended a nationwide temporary ceasefire until the end of May for post-earthquake recovery efforts, ground reports indicate ongoing daily airstrikes, drone attacks, and artillery shelling in Kachin State and other regions.
However, despite the public’s hardships, the SAV had previously announced in April that the election would be held in December and January, divided into four phases.
Additionally, for the election to proceed, a census has been conducted in only 145 out of 330 townships. Areas controlled by revolutionary forces and conflict-heavy townships were excluded from the census.
Political analysts argue that under the current circumstances, the election will not be free or fair, and the SAC’s planned election will lack genuine justice.
They also state that instead of ensuring a democratic process, the SAC has prioritized military operations and enforced mandatory conscription for youths aged 18 to 35.
Parties intending to compete in the SAC’s election must submit their applications by May 9. As of May 5, 54 political parties have already registered, according to the UEC’s announcement.
