In Myitkyina, Kachin State, today, May 21, State Administration Council (SAC) troops have increased their operational activities, setting up checkpoints in previously unmanned locations and conducting inspections, according to local sources.

“This morning, they blocked the road near Sitapru University’s western entrance with about two security barricades. They’re checking men more strictly—opening motorcycle toolboxes and searching all bags. Vehicles are also being stopped and inspected. Around ten soldiers in full combat gear are conducting the checks,” said a local resident.

Today, SAC forces have stationed themselves at multiple locations in Myitkyina, including: the road west of Sitapru University, between the maternity hospital and the golf course, the traffic light east of the General Hospital, in front of the drug addiction treatment center, near the Asia Energy fuel pump, the traffic light near Basic Education High School (1) and Nam Jim and Kyarar Pati neighborhoods.

Authorities are conducting interrogations and inspections in these areas.

Some locals speculate that the heightened security measures may be linked to yesterday’s incident on May 20, when allied forces of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) shot down two out of three military supply helicopters en route to Bhamo.

Residents in Myitkyina report increased disruptions in daily movement due to the military’s intensified operations, inspections, and new troop deployments.
