Due to escalating military tensions near Tanai town in Kachin State, students preparing to retake the matriculation examination are growing increasingly concerned about their ability to sit for the exams, according to education officials in Tanai.
"If they take the exams here, we worry fighting might break out. But if we try to send them to Myitkyina, there are too many military checkpoints and conscription drives along the way. Even when we explain they're exam candidates, they're turned back," said a teacher from Tanai.
Students attempting to travel to Myitkyina to take the exams have reportedly been forced to return due to increased military conscription activities and security checks by junta forces along the route.
While preparations are being made to hold the exams in Tanai itself, concerns remain that clashes could disrupt the testing period.
The retakes come after more than 400,000 answer sheets from Grade 12 examinees in Kachin State, Mandalay, Sagaing, and Naypyidaw were destroyed in a fire at Mandalay University's main dormitory following the March 28 earthquake.
Education authorities have scheduled the makeup exams for June 16-21, 2025, for affected regions.
