It is reported that some schools have been temporarily closed in certain areas where people have resettled because of air and drone bomb attacks by the military council, even though there are no actual battles in these places.
“Our village no longer has military troops, so people returned home. However, we have to remain constantly cautious because of air attacks. The airstrikes started recently in Sadung area and since then we have been more careful. Because of that, all the KIO government schools opened in the village have had to be closed. Also, all the meetings planned to be held in village halls and churches are put on hold due to airstrike fears. We don’t know what will happen,” said a local resident.
Since August, the military council has been intensifying air and drone bomb attacks using aircraft to recover outposts in Kachin State from which they had withdrawn. Because airstrikes have been conducted even in non conflict areas, many civilians have been harmed or killed. The military is currently focusing assaults around the areas of Chihpwi, Pangwa, Sadung, Kanpaiti, aiming to retake these zones lost in 2024.
Fierce fighting resumed at the Waimaw-Lamyang area from 6 a.m. on October 8. Hence, although locals have returned home, they remain worried since air attacks keep targeting even areas controlled by the KIA without direct battles taking place.
