The Passport Office in Myitkyina, Kachin State has stopped issuing new passports and renewing passports until March 2024, according to Myitkyina residents.

According to an employee of the passport office, from the beginning of December 2023 to the beginning of March of next year, those who have made a token appointment in advance, and those who want to apply for a new passport and those who want to renew their passports, will no longer be able to issue for passport.

The exact reason for the suspension of passport issuance is unknown, but according to an office employee, it may be due to a change in position or a change in people. He said it might be due to the fact that the list of pre-token holders is full.

Within this year, the number of passport holders and the passport renewals has increased significantly, and since April, they have been making appointments using the token system, so the list of those who have already made token appointments is up to until early March 6, 2024.

Since 2021 political instability, the number of people applying for passports has increased, and they have to wait in line to get a token appointment in advance, so the token appointment has been suspended since the beginning of December. In addition, those who have not made an appointment in advance and those who want to make an emergency can do so without the need for a broker at a cost of up to 400,000 kyats.

Follow by the 2021 political changes of Myanmar, the number of people who want to apply passport at the passport office has increased and they have to wait up to 5 months with the token appointment system. According to the people who lined up themselves, the price used to cost between 50,000 and 100,000 kyats is now up to 400,000 kyats.
