The public market place in Laiza moved to the traditional Manau Park

According to local residents, excavation work has been started yesterday, on December 29, at 7:00 A.M., to convert the Manau Pillar and Manau Park area, which are valued as the pinnacle of Kachin people in Laiza, the KIO headquarters of Kachin State, into the public market of Laiza.

According to the unnamed local, the current market place is cramped for space and goods. Because the public road in front of the market is very narrow and it is said that the cars and motorcycle accidents often occur there.

An official said that the plan was to build and change the marketplace. So they excavated the Manau Park area and Manau pillar located in the center of Laiza with an excavator due to the difficulties mentioned above.

Another local resident said that this Manau Park area is to be relocated and converted into a market place since 2021. And he said that he felt sad when it actually started this year.

“Because I was very busy during the last Revolution Day Event in 2006 and 2007 at the Manau Park. I was very tired and very happy at the same time, so now when they destroy it, I feel unhappy in my heart,” he continued.

It is also known that after the current Manau Park area has been converted into a market place, the new Kachin Traditional Manau Park area of Laiza is planned to be rebuilt at the old golf course site near the confluence of Laiza Creek and Mung Lai Creek.

According to an official, it is said that the change between the market place and the traditional Manau Park area was not officially announced to the public, but was done under the area-government’s instructions.
