In the previous years, people who came to make the National Identification Card did not have to spend any money, but since the beginning of this year, when the political situations became unstable, they have been charged exorbitant amounts of money to the public.
"Before the coup, applying for National Identification Card did not cost any penny. It is often heard that the previous chief of immigration told people to file a complaint if the employees in his office asked for money. The chief and the deputy chief, who lately transferred to the office, are conniving with each other and extorting money from the public,” said the woman, who came to the immigration office to exchange her old ID card.
According to the locals, the immigration office is currently charging young people who came to register for a new ID Card and those who will exchange their old-age registration card from 60,000 kyats to 100,000 kyats. If the public does not pay the full amount requested by them, there will be delays in registration process.
Similarly, the households who want to replace their household record registers’ sheets with the damaged ones have to pay from 100,000 kyats to 150,000 kyats.
In Mohnyin Township, after promulgation of the conscription law, teenagers and middle-aged youth came to make a new ID Card to go to the border areas to search for job opportunities. According to the increase in the number of people making ID cards, the staff of immigration office in Mohnyin are also demanding more money.
