Local residents said that the Shanni Nationalities Army (SNA) has stated that those who do not cast ballots or refuse to participate in the election organized by the military council in the Sa Maw area will be punished.
It is reported that SNA forces have re occupied the Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 383 and LIB 384 bases stationed in Sa Maw, and that residents have been told villages will be burned and destroyed if locals do not vote in the election scheduled to be held on December 28.
Military council troops and SNA forces stationed at LIB 383 and LIB 384 bases are also reportedly carrying out strict inspections and interrogations at checkpoints under their control. In addition, they are said to be firing heavy and small arms indiscriminately around nearby villages at all hours, day and night.
Near the LIB 383 and LIB 384 bases, clashes also broke out around midday on December 16 between a joint KIA force and military council troops.
Residents said they are worried that fighting will continue to intensify, as the Military Council and SNA forces have reportedly suffered heavy casualties.
