According to residents of Hpakant, three family members were killed yesterday afternoon (7 December) when an artillery shell exploded inside Malaung Village, Lone Khin Village, Hpakant Township.
Residents said that yesterday afternoon, the Military Council troops fired indiscriminately toward residential areas using drones and heavy artillery. One shell landed on a house in Mlaung Village, Lonekin Village Tract, killing three members of the family. Only one infant survived.
“There were five people in the family. One of them was not at home. Among the people who were at home, only the infant survived by luck,” a local from Hpakant said.
Among the five family members, the eldest son had gone to spend the night at his uncle’s house when the shell landed on their home. Therefore, only the eldest son and the infant survived, according to reports.
On 5 December, an adult man was also found dead from gunshot wounds near a shop in Yuma Village, Hpakant. Hpakant residents say that such fatalities occur frequently due to the Military Council's indiscriminate artillery shelling in the area.
