It has been reported that large vehicles are unable to pass and are stuck on the Myitkyina-Chiphwe road, at the Dum Bang Bridge before reaching Mandong village, after the central concrete pillar collapsed, causing cracks on the bridge.
“Aged bridge pillars have started to crack, and some bricks have fallen off, making the bridge unstable. Only small cars and motorcycles can pass, while large vehicles have been stranded for days,” said a driver operating on the Myitkyina-Chiphwe route.
The Dum Bang Bridge has been in use for over a decade. Due to bricks falling off and the collapse of the central concrete pillar, large vehicles are unable to pass and are stuck. Vehicles coming from both the Panwa-Chiphwe side and the Myitkyina side are stranded on either side of the bridge.
“At first, the bridge was built with ordinary bricks for strength. As it aged, it started to deteriorate. That’s why they laid steel plates on the bridge. The fact that small cars and motorcycles can still pass is because of those steel plates,” the driver continued.
The collapse and cracking of the bridge’s concrete pillar occurred on June 19. Currently, only small vehicles and motorcycles can pass, while large vehicles have been stuck for days, causing traffic jams on both the Chiphwe and Myitkyina sides.
Additionally, it is known that the bridge sustained further damage after being hit by floods and strong currents in early June, leading to the current situation.
Local residents and travelers are hoping for the Dum Bang Bridge to be repaired as soon as possible, but due to the ongoing conflict and political situation, reconstruction may be delayed.
