It has been reported that up to 12 people have been arrested under the junta’s election security law and related orders, accused of encouraging protests and campaigns to disrupt the planned general election to be organized by the military council.

Out of the 10 political parties initially approved to participate in the military planned election, four have been deregistered by the junta election body, citing “failure to meet required standards” for party offices.

In addition, the junta has been taking action against individuals who make speeches, organize gatherings, hold protests, write, post posters and materials, or otherwise advocate against the election in public places and on social media, saying such acts are attempts to obstruct the electoral process.

Officials claim these are punishable under provisions of the Election Safeguard Law. According to Section 23(a) of the law, anyone found guilty of violating prohibitions can face a prison sentence of not less than three years and up to seven years, in addition to fines.

The junta enacted the “Law on Safeguarding Elections from Disruption, Obstruction, and Prevention” in late July, after lifting the state of emergency but before dissolving the military council, in an effort to tighten control over election activities.
