It has been reported that two children died after playing with an unexploded bomb inside the compound of a pagoda in Senghpra Village, Hpakant Township.
The incident occurred around 5 PM on May 27, when the two children were playing with the unexploded bomb inside the pagoda compound. The bomb suddenly exploded, resulting in their deaths.
The two children were Maung Marip Sut Seng Awng (12 years old) and Maung Marip Sut Seng Naw (10 years old), sons of U Marip Sut Ring and Daw Jum Hpawk Kaw. They died on the spot.
Local residents said that soldiers from the military council have occupied villages, including pagodas and schools, and that leftover military weapons pose a threat to civilians, leading to such fatalities.
The problem of unexploded military ordnance causing civilian deaths has been increasing daily in Myanmar after the outbreak of armed conflict. Myanmar is also among the countries with the highest number of casualties caused by leftover weapons worldwide.
This issue is widespread not only in Kachin State but also across almost the entire country. The situation has worsened particularly since the military takeover in 2021, with more incidents occurring after 2023.
According to UNICEF, from January to September 2024, a total of 130 people nationwide have died due to bombs, and 759 people have sustained injuries, including amputations.
