During the military junta’s conduct of Phase Two of the election, attacks were carried out in no fewer than 10 townships, resulting in the deaths of two election staff members, while civilians were also injured, according to a statement released by the junta.

The statement said that on January 11, while Phase Two of the election was underway, attacks involving bombs, drones attacks, and small arms fire were carried out in Hpruso Township in Kayah (Karenni) State; Gangaw, Sidoktaya, Salin, and Kanma towns in Magway Region; Chaung-U, Butalin, and Myinmu towns in Sagaing Region; and Thantabin Township in Bago Region.

Following these attacks, voting was suspended at some polling stations, and several polling stations were also forced to close. Some of the townships where the election was held are areas that the military regime has not been able to fully control, and they are also regions where fighting has frequently occurred in the past.

Despite the lack of security, the military junta proceeded with holding the election in these areas. The military junta has also announced that the remaining Phase Three of the election will continue as planned on January 25.
