Although no clashes were taking place between the two sides, indiscriminate artillery shelling by the Military Commission, both day and night, resulted in the death of a two year old child and injuries to five people at around 11 p.m. on November 20, when an artillery shell exploded in Hpakant's Seng Tawng Village.
According to reports, a two year old boy, Maung Chaw Than Lwin from Seng Tawng Village in Hpakant, was killed when the shell landed and exploded, and five others were injured.
“Around here, they fire every night. As you know, this is a mining area so people have to keep working to survive. When things quiet down, people try to resume their lives. We always have to stay alert to protect ourselves. Even if there’s no fighting, they fire because they have weapons. There is no day without the sound of artillery,” a resident of Hpakant said.
Troops from the Military Commission’s Hpakant Battalion Camp and Mashi Kahtawng's Rakhine Hill reportedly fired artillery more than 10 times, striking areas including Seng Tawng Blocks 1 and 3, and San Thida Hill, where one child was killed, three women and two men were injured, and several houses were damaged.
In Kachin State, besides Hpakant, there are also heightened military tensions in Bhamaw and Waimaw. Although the Waimaw side appeared relatively calm over the past week, residents said that around 11 p.m. on November 20, continuous artillery fire was again heard in the area.
