Following the recent flooding of the Je Yang stream in Laiza, the headquarters of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), widespread destruction has occurred including damage to numerous homes and the complete loss of the school clinic at Alen Bum School, swept away by floodwaters. As a result, emergency medical supplies are now urgently needed for the more than 1,000 students enrolled there, sources confirmed.

The KIO government has assigned two medical professionals, and support is being offered by the Child’s Dream Foundation, which has been providing medical supplies regularly. However, the current crisis has overwhelmed existing efforts, said a teacher from Alen Bum School:

“The clinic at Alen Bum School was built with the help of KPICT (Kachin Political Interim Coordination Team) because it was essential. The government had assigned two health staff, and Child Dream had been supplying basic medicines regularly. But those supplies weren’t sufficient even before. Now, all stocked medicines were swept away in the flood, and that’s why we are in urgent need of new medical supplies.”

The school’s clinic was originally built in 2022 with help from KPICT due to the increasing number of annual student enrollments. Alen Bum School, located in a remote border region, was established specifically to serve children of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and those from areas where access to main towns is difficult.

Earlier, most students at the school came from border villages, but since the 2021 coup, children from across the country have been attending. In the 2025–2026 academic year, the school is currently serving a total of 1,355 students, making it one of the largest schools in the region, urgently requiring not only medical supplies but also additional forms of humanitarian support.

In addition, there is an immediate need for clothing, blankets, and household essentials for displaced people in flood-affected areas including Mung Seng Yang, Ja Htu Kawng, Je Yang IDP Camp, Hpun Lum Yang, Sut Mu Aung, and surrounding areas.
