Due to the security situation, the Myitkyina–Mandalay highway has been closed, and vehicles trapped along the route were reportedly attacked by airstrikes carried out by the Military Council, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to vehicles.
On 27 December, along the Myitkyina-Mandalay highway between Khin U and Shwebo, the Military Council reportedly carried out bombing attacks using helicopters. As a result, nine civilians were killed and more than twenty others were injured.
Those killed were reportedly travelers and drivers. Due to the airstrike, around nine vehicles including passenger buses, fuel tankers, and cargo trucks were destroyed.
It is reported that the Military Council has frequently carried out aerial bombardments along this highway section. Attacks using fighter jets, helicopters, and missiles have resulted in deaths and injuries among travelers and drivers, and passenger vehicles have also been damaged.
Since 10 December, the Myitkyina-Mandalay highway has been closed due to the security situation. On 18 December, another airstrike was carried out along the same route, resulting in the deaths of seven civilians. As of now, thousands of vehicles are still reportedly stranded along the highway.
Although the Military Council claims to be conducting elections to build a democratic state, it is reportedly carrying out military attacks against civilians as if they were enemies. Indiscriminate shelling and aerial attacks using aircraft and heavy weapons in areas where civilians are present are said to be occurring regularly.
