Within Three Years After The Coup In Myanmar, There Have Been 82 Bank And Gold Shop Robberies

A Myanmar research group called Data For Myanmar announced on February 20 that there were 82 Bank and Gold shop robberies in the last three years since the coup.

There were 25 robberies inside the bank building and 57 robberies inside the gold shop and a total of 82 incidents occurred, according to Data For Myanmar.

Mandalay has the highest number of gold shop robberies 12 times, among the places that robberies took place. The second most was Yangon and it happened 6 times and the third most was Hpakant and it happened 3 times.

In addition, Kachin State, Sagaing Division, Mandalay Division, Southern and Northern Shan State were also reported of the robberies in banks and gold shops.

Most of the bank robberies happened between 2021 and 2022 and gradually decreased. The gold shop robberies occur at least once every month from May 2022 to February 2024.

Of the gold shop robbery cases, only more than 20 percent of the total cases were arrested and prosecuted. Data For Myanmar stated that there were 7 incidents of attempted robbery of gold shops and 50 incidents of assault. In addition, 2 employees and the owner of the gold shop were killed and 7 were injured during the incident.
