In Nyaungkai village, Moe Nyin Township, a 50-year-old woman named Daw Kyi San stepped on a landmine while searching for mushrooms, resulting in both her legs being severely injured and amputated, according to local sources.
“Currently, it is mushroom season, and mushrooms are fetching good prices. Villagers and farmers rely on gathering natural seasonal food to sell because the cost of living has become difficult. So they depend on forest products for their food and livelihood,” said a local woman.
The incident occurred around 9:30 AM on May 20, near the eastern forest area about 2 miles from Nyaungkai village, where the woman stepped on a landmine planted by the Burmese military regime.
“Actually, our villagers have attended mine risk awareness training. The place where she stepped on the mine is about a mile away from the mine warning signs, so she did not realize there was a mine there,” the woman added.
Currently, Daw Kyi San has had both legs amputated, and her left hand and foot are severely damaged. Due to concerns at Moe Nyin Hospital, she has been transferred to Myitkyina Hospital for further treatment.
Additionally, as she comes from a farming family and is facing financial difficulties for medical treatment, she is in need of assistance.
